Getting outside in Chicago

With summer coming to an end, there’s still time to enjoy the balmy breezes as you take a break from your conference or trade show in Chicago. While walking down the Magnificent Mile for shopping or a delicious meal is always a treat, try and take advantage of some other (mostly free) outdoor fun.

See a free movie. Until mid September, Movies in the Park screens free films in various parks around the city starting at dusk. Grab some popcorn, maybe a blanket, and let the cinematic evening begin.

Catch a festival. The Chicago Jazz Festival, Berghof Oktoberfest, and the Randolph Street Market all happen in September, just to name a few. Like art and crafts? Try the Renegade Craft Fair or the Lincoln Park Art Faire. Maybe you’ll find the perfect original gift to take back – for yourself or even someone else.

Go to a market. Get some local, sustainable food at the Green City Market Wednesdays and Saturdays in Lincoln Park. Shop where the chefs shop, taste what’s in season, and rub elbows with the natives while you take a break from continental breakfast blahs.

Run! Walk! Or maybe unicycle? Get out and explore before the winter comes. Join up with a run, workout in a park, or rent a bike for a day and spend it cruising along Lake Michigan. Watch out for all the tourists at Navy Pier, but then it’s smooth sailing. If a tour is more your speed, why not take one on wheels? Or learn about all architecture with a walking tour and then impress everyone with your insider knowledge about skyscrapers throughout history or neighborhood gems.

Lay on a beach. Get sand between your toes as you look over Lake Michigan and the skyline. Miles of sand and 33 beaches – you’ll definitely find the perfect one for you. Just head towards the water!

There just may be a conference in your field coming up in Chicago — what a great reason to visit and enjoy all that the city has to offer.
