San Francisco, Tips from a Local

Heading to San Francisco for a conference or a trade show? Whether you’re here for the first time, or a frequent visitor, it’s hard to know the best places to go in the City in your free time. I’ve shared below some of my favorite places in San Francisco that the guide books probably won’t tell you about:
Dolores Park: For some of the best views of the City head on down to Dolores park. Bring a blanket, camera, pack a picnic and soak up the sun while you people watch. Tip: 20th and Church has has the best view.
Bi-Rite Creamery: made with local, organic ingredients this is hands down the best ice cream shop around. Enjoy the creative flavors like balsamic strawberry and snickerdoodle. Tip: If there’s a long line, go around the corner to Bi-Rite market, and get a pint to go.
Buena Vista Cafe: I was wary of going here since it was in the center of the always packed Fisherman’s Wharf, but I’m sure glad I caved. They have some of the best breakfast in town, and are known for their famous Irish Coffee (the first in the US).
Marina Shopping: Leave the crowded Union Square to the tourists. Instead enjoy a stroll along Chestnut and Union Street in the Marina. These streets, a couple blocks apart, are flat (a major plus in this city), and offer a variety of stores from boutiques to chains like Sephora and the Gap. There’s restaurants everywhere all along both streets and all are great.
Ferry Plaza Farmers Market: San Francisco is known for it’s Green efforts, and Organic cravings. This is perhaps why it has one of the best farmers markets in the world every Saturday from 8am to 2pm at the Ferry Building. Bring cash, an appetite and enjoy the local favorites and breathtaking view of the bay. Tip: stop at the BlueBottle Coffee booth for the best coffee in the city.
Muni Passports: Taxi’s can get expensive. Even though SF is a small city, it can cost you around 20 dollars to get across town. Thankfully, the local bus system, Muni, goes just about everywhere in the City. You can get a 1 day passport for 13 dollars, a 3 day for 20, or a Muni and Cable car 7 day passport.
