Chicon 7 will be the 70th World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”), an international gathering of the science fiction and fantasy communities. The Worldcon attracts members each year from North and South America, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Asia. In the last decade, the convention has been held on four different continents.

Worldcons are organized and run by fans, volunteers all. The majority of the organizing/operating committee changes each year with the location of the convention, although many members volunteer their time year after year regardless of location. And yes, all the volunteers buy their memberships, too.

Chicon 7 attendees will include authors, artists, editors, publishers, gamers, vendors, musicians, and fans. Everyone who attends joins by buying a membership. This means there are no paid guests aside from the convention Guests of Honor — everyone else you see, regardless of whether they are a first timer or an author who has sold millions of books, has paid for the privilege of attending.

You will see exhibits, vendors, the Hugo Awards ceremony, the Art Show and auction, the Masquerade, and hundreds of program items. Just before the convention, a complete program will be posted on the website so you can start planning each day of your convention. (Although you can print or access the schedule at home, when you get to the con you will receive a printed bound souvenir book and a pocket program).

Chicon 7, the 70th World Science Fiction Convention, will take place August 30 through September 3 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.  Chicon 7 Guests of Honor: Mike Resnick, Rowena Morrill, Story Musgrave, Peggy Rae Sapienza, Jane Frank. Toastmaster: John Scalzi.

The Hugo Award® is the leading award for excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy. The Hugos are awarded each year by the World Science Fiction Society, at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon).

Voting for the Hugo Awards takes place in two stages. The first stage, nomination, is open to anyone who has a Supporting or Attending membership in the previous, current, or following year’s Worldcon as of January 31. For Chicon 7, this means:

• All Supporting and all Adult and Young Adult Attending members of Renovation, the 2011 Worldcon

• All Supporting and all Adult and Young Adult Attending members of Chicon 7, the 2012 Worldcon, as of January 31, 2012

• All Supporting and all Adult and Young Adult Attending members of LoneStarCon 3, the 2013 Worldcon, as of January 31, 2012.

Members can nominate any eligible work or person. Nominations can be submitted online or by postal mail (see website for details). The nominating period closes on Sunday, March 11, 2012, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

The second stage of voting is the final ballot. This stage is open only to Chicon 7 members. In the final ballot, members choose between the five finalists in each category. The final ballot will be announced April 7, 2012, at several conventions being held over the Easter weekend. Full details of the ballot announcement will be released during March 2012.

The Hugo Awards themselves are presented at a formal ceremony which is always one of the highlights of the Worldcon, and we expect Chicon 7’s ceremony to be no different. The Chicon 7 ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 2, 2012. https://chicon.org/hugo-awards.php

The official web site of the Hugo Awards is at http://www.thehugoawards.org. This site includes a full history of the Hugo Awards, nominees and winners, information on the voting process, a photo gallery of past trophy designs, and much more.
